California Medigap - Medicare Supplement Insurance
All Medicare Supplements (Medigap) in California have been standardized by the federal government since 1992. According the publication "Choosing a Medigap Policy".
Insurance companies can only sell you a "standardized" Medigap policy. Each type of Medigap policy offers the same basic benefits, no matter which insurance company sells it. Usually the only difference between Medigap policies sold by different insurance companies is the cost.
The most popular Medicare Supplement is Plan F. Every Plan F is identical but the premium will vary depending on company. In Los Angeles (for example) a 70 year old non-smoking woman can pay a high of $209 per month to a low of $154. Other plans may be more cost effective.
Because plans are standardized many consumers believe they may as well simply insure with either the first company they speak with, or go along with the same company that wrote their pre-65 coverage. By simply doing this, one may pay $250-300-500 or more per year for exactly the same benefits offered by a lower priced carrier.
Underwriting may be an issue in other states, but Californians have an added benefit not available elsewhere. Every year beginning with your birthday and ending 30 days later, a Californian with a Medicare Supplement may change their plan on a guaranteed basis with any other carrier offering a standard plan. You can save a great deal of money by taking advantage of this benefit only available to residents in California.
